I first saw a photo of a colossal Mayan head sculpture c. 900CE in a natural history book at the age of ten, and it made a lifelong impression on me. They are cut from a single boulder of basalt, and average 10ft in height, with a weight of 8 tons. This treatment of an Olmec tribe head is based on a principle of exaggeration: all the pits and dimples in the stone were deliberately drilled by their makers, and are all greatly enlarged here as dots and starbursts, which in turn informs the surrounding context.
